Tuskegee Airman honored in Riverdale

RIVERDALE, Ga. -

A Tuskegee airman living in Riverdale was honored on Wednesday.

Brew Graham, a 97-year-old "Redtail" lives quietly in Riverdale. He missed out on the 2007 Gold Medal-honoring ceremony of the Tuskegee Airmen by then-President George W.Bush.

Congressman David Scott awarded Graham a bronze replica of the Congressional Gold Medal.

Graham remained under the radar to much of the world until the release of the popular Redtails movie earlier this year.

The Tuskegee Airmen were the first African-American military aviators in the United States Armed Forces. Yet they were still subjected to racial discrimination, both within and outside the Army.

Even though the story of his heroism was the focus of a major motion picture, Graham has still never seen Redtails. A hearing impediment, and backlogged schedules at the Veterans Affairs clinic, prevented Graham from watching his own story on the big screen.
