ATLANTA -

Atlanta community bankers offered free gas as part of a nationwide campaign on Thursday.

The gas giveaway was sponsored by Family Savings Credit Union in Hiram and the Credit Union of Atlanta. They paid $20 in gas to each of the first 200 people to arrive at the Shell Food Mart at 1790 Howell Mill Road Northwest in Atlanta.

"This is a blessing, man," said Roger Williams, who took advantage of the free gas offer. He says the free gas will get him to a job interview on Friday.

"I'm going to tell you. I got an interview tomorrow. I was wondering where I was going to get some gas man. This is it. I came up here early. I said I had to have this gas," said Williams.

Like Williams, others said they desperately needed the gas. They indicated their gas tanks were on empty.

Even some Atlanta ice cream truck drivers took advantage of the giveaway.

"We all have to pay for our own gas and it gets expensive," said one ice cream truck driver.

Another ice cream truck driver said anytime there is free gas you have to take advantage of it.

The gas giveaway was all part of the Take Back Your Banking Campaign which encouraged people to drop their mega-banks and head to smaller community banks.
