MARTA 'Breeze' card problems cause delays

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Thousands of commuters were delayed after the electronic payment system broke down Wednesday morning on MARTA.

Some riders were told they could not get on the train even though they had prepaid on their Breeze cards. They were told their debit or credit card charge did not show up on MARTA account system.

Breeze cards allow riders to load up funds for multiple trips on MARTA trains and buses.

One woman said that she checked her bank statement after being rejected by the MARTA machine. She said her statement showed that the $95 for a 30 day MARTA pass had been deducted from her account. She said the supervisor credited her for one trip on Wednesday and that the situation should be rectified within two days.

MARTA  spokesperson Lyle V. Harris apologized to customers that had any problems. He said the Breeze card system was undergoing an upgrade, which created technical problems.

MARTA issued a statement saying, "MARTA wants to ensure that all customers are aware of this temporary change so that they are able to prepare accordingly. MARTA is diligently working with our vendor Cubic to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and will provide updates as they become available. We regret the inconvenience to our customers."

It is not known when the problem will be resolved.
