ATLANTA -

Wednesday night's Powerball jackpot has reached a whopping $320 million, and that has people rushing to stores to buy tickets. When it comes to picking lottery numbers, everyone has their own method.

Believe it or not, some methods are better than others.

Terion Montgomery lets the computer pick his numbers. He calls those who choose their own numbers "9 to 5 gamblers."

"I don't do all that stuff.  I don't have a strategy, just try my luck.  If I win, I win, I win,' said Montgomery.

Tracey Jackson uses what is probably the most popular method to choose her numbers -- birthdays.

"I play the same numbers all the time. I just pick my kids' birthday, my birthday, family birthday, stuff like that," said Jackson.

Some people even get their numbers from an after dinner treat at Fortune Cookie Restaurant.

"You can't win the lottery with a special technique," said Georgia Tech mathematician Dr. Lew Lefton.

Lefton says there's no way improve your odds of winning. But he does have some advice on what numbers to pick.

"Choose numbers that you think are unlikely to be chosen by other people," said Lefton.

That way if you do win, you'll have less of a chance of sharing the money with someone else. So choosing numbers 32 or above to avoid all those picking birthdays. You can also take numbers all in a row, since people think those will never hit.

Lefton also has some bad news.

"You are not going to win the lottery. I'm sorry but you're not going to win the lottery," said Lefton.

With odds of winning more than 175 million to one, it would take spending almost $2 million to have a 1 percent chance of hitting it big. He says buying more than one ticket is a waste of money.

"You are going to get just as much excitement checking to see if that one lost as you will making sure all ten lose," said Lefton.

Lefton says you should think of it like a cup of coffee. A little splurge is a chance to buy a dream.

"If you're choosing a game that funds my kid's education, that's not a bad thing."

What you're really doing with the Powerball is buying a dream. You can spend $2 to buy one ticket, or 20 to buy 10. But the dream is the same. And with buying one ticket, you'll still have $18 in your pocket.
