Fulton sheriff's department employees complain about drug test procedure

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Employees of the Fulton County Sheriff's Office are complaining about random drug test procedures. They said that superiors sent co-workers into bathroom stalls to watch them submit their urine samples.

As early as 1995, a directive explained that a monitor should supervise as closely as possible before and after a testing sample is given.

For the most part, other metro area sheriff's departments send employees to a medical lab.

Retired sheriff's supervisor Phillip Mobley said that when he was working, an officer told him that he had to observe him urinate in the cup.

Mobley said that he explained he would not do that.

"I told him, ‘Your job is to make sure that no foreign objects is inside the stall and then I'll urinate inside the cup and give it to you and you handle it from there,'" said Mobley.

Mobley said he believes that Fulton County should rethink having its officer of professional standards administer the test.

The sheriff's office said it is investigating how the tests were handled.
