An angry parent is demanding answers after a school bus driver dropped his daughter off along a busy road in Clayton County.
Lavae Lewis, a student at Lake Ridge Elementary in Riverdale, is enrolled in an off-campus afterschool program. The girl wears a special wristband indicated how she's supposed to be transported home. The school staff was supposed to put the 7-year-old girl on that day care center's van when school let out Monday, but somehow she received the wrong wristband and was placed on a school bus.
The child ended up on a busy intersection. A teacher from the school saw the child and knew she didn't belong there, picked her up and brought her back to the school.
Lavae's father, Laurence Lewis, can't understand how the mix-up occurred.
"Somehow or another, they put her on a bus and then put her off on Highway 87. A 7-year-old little girl. And I want to know what happened," said Lewis.
School district spokesman David Waller says an investigation is underway to determine what went wrong.
"Unfortunately when you're dealing with 52,000 students, occasionally things like this happen. Obviously even one is too many and we strive to do everything that we can to make sure that these kind of things don't happen," said Waller.
Waller said an investigation is underway to find out how the mistake happened.
Lewis is upset no one from the school called him after the mix-up. He met with school officials on Tuesday and believes the school bus driver should face disciplinary action.
Any employees found responsible could face re-training, suspension or even be terminated.
