Atlanta police arrest 2 accused of identity theft

ATLANTA (AP) - Atlanta police have arrested two women they say were involved in a brazen plot to steal personal information from police and fire department personnel.

Police say Cintia Ximena Pedone and Dawnetta Patrice Underwood were arrested Friday and face identity theft and racketeering charges.

Police say the women went to police precincts and fire stations pretending to be insurance agents. They told employees the city was changing its insurance options and got some officers and supervisors to fill out application packets that included personal information on the employees and their families.

One lieutenant questioned them when their procedures seemed inconsistent with city policy.

Police say they have recovered 39 fraudulent application packets from the women. It wasn't immediately known whether they have attorneys.
