Get Up & Go: Georgia's covered bridges

Posted: Updated:

Remember the book and movie The Bridges of Madison County?  It was set in Iowa, but it could easily have been here.  There are 15 covered bridges in Georgia, and Cheryl White spotlights them in this Get Up & Go report.

The first stop is Cartersville in Bartow County.  That's where we find the Euharlee Covered Bridge, built in 1886.  It is the only Georgia covered bridge to have its own museum, which is open Wednesday through Sunday.  There is also a restaurant and general store nearby.

The next stop is in White County, just east of Helen.  That's where you'll find the Stovall covered bridge.  The bridge was constructed in 1895 and was featured in the 1951 movie I'd Climb the Highest Mountain.  At 34 feet long, Stovall covered bridge is the shortest covered bridge in the state.  This would be the perfect place for lunch with picnic tables right by the water.

The last stop is the longest covered bridge in Georgia.  The Watson Mill Covered Bridge is sometimes called the king of Georgia's covered bridges, measuring 229 feet long.  It was built in 1885 right on the Oglethorpe-Madison County line.  Be sure to take your camera, this bridge and the rock shoals below are gorgeous.  Watson Mill Covered Bridge is located in Watson Mill State Park.
