GBI investigating Canton police officer

Posted: Updated:
CANTON, Ga. -

A sergeant for the Canton Police Department is under investigation for allegedly misusing department funds.

Canton Police Chief Robert Merchant has suspended Sgt. Stacy Bailey and requested a Georgia Bureau of Investigation to look into possible criminal activity by Bailey and a Sandy Springs police captain.

"As a result of possible criminal charges against you, you are relieved of your police powers," Merchant wrote in an internal memo.

Bailey is the Canton Police Department's public spokesperson.

Also under investigation is Sandy Springs Police Captain Scott Jamison. He heads that department's SWAT team.

Merchant alleges a sexual relationship between Bailey and Jamison. He charges that they stole thousands of dollars in Canton police funds, according to the memo.

In a letter to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Merchant alleges that Bailey collected donations for the Canton Police Explorers under false pretenses and then used the money on a $6,000 customized golf cart from Superior Motorsports in Woodstock.

Merchant alleges that the golf cart was given to Jamison's disabled son, according to the letter to the GBI.

In the letter, Merchant called Bailey and Jamison's alleged behavior "contrary to the core values of the profession...and a violation of the law."

Bailey and Jamison refused to answer any questions about the investigation. The Canton Police Department, Sandy Springs police and the GBI did not return requests for comment on Thursday.

Bailey is suspended while the GBI investigates. There has been no word on what action, if any, has been taken
