ATLANTA -

The director of the Atlanta Police Academy does not believe an instructor denied a recruit water during a training exercise.

Sources told FOX 5 that a SWAT team recruit became ill on a hot day in July and an instructor ordered him to finish a drill before he could have any water.

Academy director Jeff Glazier acknowledged that the recruit became ill and sent to the hospital for observation.

Glazier said that he talked to the recruit, who told him that he was never asked and was not denied water.

"My opinion is that he didn't feel comfortable asking for water. He didn't feel comfortable asking for a break," said Glazier.

The director said he still needs to talk the instructors on duty that day about the incident.

"We just simply need to get together, we need to collaborate and we need to create an environment that's safe for the recruits," said Glazier.

After about three hours, the recruit was released from the hospital. He has since returned to his training class.
