Computer virus alert: FBI Ransom Virus

PHOENIX -

There's a new virus targeting our computers, and it's a nasty one. It pretends to be the FBI and it looks very official.

"These guys are good," says Ken Colburn of Data Doctors, who has to admire the latest scam.

The idea behind the "FBI Ransom Virus" is to trick people into thinking they have done something wrong.

"The whole idea is to infect your machine, give you a big scary warning the FBI is involved and then giving you a way to make sure nothing happens."

They lock down your computer, even claim to be sending your picture to the government.

There's not much you can do -- to unlock it you've got to pay $22.

"They are trying to convince you to go to a Kmart or 7-11 and get what is called a money pac and pay via the money pac," says Colburn.

Colburn says the FBI does not want money from you. That money is going to the criminals who set up the scam.

"It just goes to show that they are trying to use anything and everything to get people to pay these ridiculous scams."

To remove this virus you need to see a professional to get rid of it. It's believed this virus is spreading through spam e-mail that contains a link that could infect your computer.
