The family of an elderly woman who was beaten and shot during a home invasion is appealing for help to track down the suspect.
Evelyn Atwater, 86, is recovering after the violent attack inside her southwest Atlanta apartment last month.
Stanley Atwater still has trouble understanding why someone attacked his mother.
"Why would you beat up an 86-year-old woman first of all, and then you're going to shoot her," questioned Stanley Atwater.
Family members can't forget the day someone broke into Evelyn Atwater's unit at the QLS senior complex on Campbellton Road last month.
"She was fortunately able enough to make it to her neighbor's house, and give her neighbor my number after this horrific crime," said Atwater's daughter, Wendy Truitt. "At the time they just said beaten, but when we got her to the hospital we were given the report that a bullet -- she had been shot [and there] was a bullet in her brain.
As a result of the beating and shooting, Evelyn Atwater lost sight in one eye and some of her motor functions. Still, she continues to survive despite the extensive injuries.
"It's going be a long road to her recovery process, but she is a remarkable, God-fearing, phenomenal, extraordinary woman so she is talking more and she's getting better," said Truitt.
Multiple leads have not yet led to an arrest. Police did release surveillance video of a suspect in the complex parking lot that morning. Atwater's children remain hopeful that some one out there knows who's responsible.
