Healthy ways to eat out

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Whether you're a fan of good old southern barbeque or spicy Chinese food, it's easy to find a mouth-watering restaurant here in Atlanta. But eating out without gaining weight? Not so easy -- or so we thought!

We all have our local restaurants we love and we don't have to give them up if we eat smart.

Prevention magazine published a book called "The 17 Day Diet" with some great rules for the road for people who love to eat out.

Jimmy Sobeck, writer of the"Eat It, Atlanta!" blog, eats out five to 15 times a week, usually dragging his patient wife Katie with him.

"I'll send a list to my wife, ‘Here's 8, pick two and we'll go visit them,'" said Sobeck.

With a little planning, experts say you can eat out without packing on the pounds.

Make up your mind before you go.

If your coworkers are headed to Chili's, go online and check out the menu first. Choose something lighter and healthier before you get to the restaurant.

Once you arrive, find a quiet area to sit. We tend to eat more when we're distracted.

When waiter comes, order first, before everyone else. That way you're not tempted by what the others are eating.

And think small. Most restaurants super-size everything. So choose an appetizer or half portion  instead of a full entree.

"I also like splitting things, too.  I kind of feel like when I'm sharing the dish with somebody, they're going to be conscious of how much I'm eating," said Sobeck. "I'm like, ‘Man, I kind of want another one of those French fries, but they're going to know that I'm eating a ton of these, so.'"

Another way to lighten up: Substitute your sides for something healthier like steamed veggies instead of fried. And leave off the extras: the butter and sour cream and heavy sauces -- even get your salad dressing on the side.

Jimmy's philosophy is moderation. If you really want it, eat it, Atlanta. Just don't over do it.

Most chefs will lighten up on the oil or butter or salt, if you ask.

In general, foods that are grilled, broiled or baked are going to lower in fat than foods that are fried.
