Officials defend security at water facilities

ATLANTA -

Atlanta city managers are defending their security at water plants despite revelations by a city council member that surveillance cameras are not operating.

The water security director took FOX 5's Morse Diggs on a tour of a couple of control stations at water facilities in midtown Atlanta.

Diggs said that the majority of cameras appeared to be operating.

Workers have complained that the city invested in equipment that managers keep locked up.

A vendor was on the facility on Monday turning cameras on. Officials said that the visit was routine and because FOX 5 was on the scene.

Managers said they do have enough working cameras.

"If we have cameras that are not working, that aren't covering as important or as secure an area and our decision is to replace that camera, then it doesn't make sense to spend the money to fix it if we're going to be replacing it," said Han Utz, Atlanta's Deputy Chief Operating Officer.

The Department of Watershed security manager told FOX 5 that he uses the cameras as a backup.
