Gwinnett Co. science labs go high-tech

Posted: Updated:
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

Science is part of every student's curriculum, but at one Gwinnett County elementary school, they take it to the next level.  Jackson Elementary School is stocked with state-of-the-art equipment designed to get kids' attention and keep it!

While things like eBooks, weather units and microorganisms might have been science fiction to students of the past, they're all part of everyday science class at Jackson Elementary.

"Research shows when students are exposed to science at earlier levels and earlier ages, they perform much better and really embrace the knowledge that they learn," said Jonathon Wetherington, Jackson Elementary's science director.

Mena Banfield and Heather Jones are the school's science specialists.  Each of them runs their own lab, and the students alternate between the two.  With Ms. Banfield, they search for little critters, and with Ms. Jones, they collect bigger ones.

"Our hope is, the more we engage students in science, the deeper we take them at an earlier age, the better they'll be prepared for college, and careers that lie in the future," said Wetherington.
