Drought forces DNR to close boat ramps at Ga. lake

Posted: Updated:
SOCIAL CIRCLE, Ga. -

Georgia officials say drought conditions and falling lake levels have forced them to close boat ramps at the Ocmulgee Public Fishing Area in middle Georgia.

Bert Deener of the state Department of Natural Resources says boat ramps on the main lake were closed because low water levels and muddy ramps were making it too difficult to launch boats. The ramps are located in Bleckley and Pulaski counties.

Officials say the main lake is 12 feet below what's considered full. The DNR says drought may not be the only problem. State wildlife officials also suspect there may be a leak in the deepest part of the lake and has called in a private engineering firm to investigate.

Officials say the lake is still open to fishing -- just not by boat.
