"Windows is offering a free Xbox 360 if you buy certain kinds of computer software. Apple may give you a gift card towards other Apple products, that's worth looking into. Your college, your child's college may have a special computer offer and even if you can prove that you're a student at a college you may be able to get a good deal. So you need to play that college card no matter what kind of computer you're buying," said Janet Bodner, the editor Of Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine.

With stores looking to make room for fall merchandise, August is the perfect time to capitalize on those end of summer sales so you can look your best on the way to class.
"August is a really great month to start buying summer seasonal apparel and sandals. Retailers are really going to offer aggressive discounts to get them out of their store so they can start preparing for fall, so you know you'll see maybe a stacking discount on top of a really excellent sale," said Lindsay Sakraida, features director at Dealnews.com.

"If you have an e-Reader, for example, there are lots of thousands of free books that you can get. There's something called the Gutenberg which makes available a lot of free books and also the regular book sellers like Amazon and Barnes and Nobles," said Bodner.
