Athens, Ga., man attacks amputee wife with crutch

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) - An Athens man has been arrested after police say he beat his amputee wife with her own crutch during a fight at their home.

The Athens Banner-Herald (http://bit.ly/OwFWgY ) reports that 38-year-old Robert Lee Austin was charged with aggravated assault, false imprisonment, battery, obstruction of a 911 call and criminal damage to property.

Austin is being held Friday without bond at the Clarke County Jail.

Authorities say the 32-year-old victim, who recently lost her leg, was knocked unconscious during the Thursday incident and taken to Athens Regional Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Authorities say he punched his wife several times in the face and struck her with a crutch, which broke during the attack.

Police were unsure what sparked the attack, but say Austin was intoxicated at the time.
