Local boy shares love of LEGOs with homeless children

GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -

Many children have grown up building things with LEGOs. Gwinnett County resident Alex Mescher, who got his start with LEGOs at an early age, wants all children to know the creativity that comes with the building blocks.

"I was about 3 and my mom started getting me sets, little sets and she helped me build them," said Mescher.

But soon, Mescher didn't need any help.

"Sometimes I build off of other things that I've done in the past," said Mescher. "Once you know how to build it, you can build anything. Anything you want. You can build cars. You can build planes. You can build scenes."

Mescher has plenty of building material for his projects.

"I have a ton upstairs. I have a whole table and two huge drawers," said Mescher.

It wasn't enough for the 9-year-old Mescher to have a lot of LEGOs. He wanted other kids to enjoy them; kids who wouldn't normally have access to LEGOs. So he created a flyer and with his little sister in tow, asked all of his neighbors for their unwanted LEGOs.

Soon the LEGOs started pouring in. Mescher is donating all the LEGOs to children in homeless shelters. He washes them, and after a quick lesson in the basics of LEGO building, the little bricks are all theirs. He calls his non-profit Brick Share, and it's not just about playing.

"We're teaching them how to use them, and build with them and we're building a foundation on engineering and architecture, science and mathematics, all sorts of stuff like that," said Mescher.

Mescher hopes that the LEGOs provide a great lesson: With a little imagination and just the right pieces, the possibilities are endless.

"I like that I'm helping all of these kids, to help them have a good start and helping them to have fun," said Mescher.
