Health alert issued in metro Atlanta over whooping cough

Posted: Updated:

The state Department of Health says it has seen a significant increase in the number of whooping cough cases.

It's a trend the FOX Medical Team first told you about a couple of weeks ago.

Affected counties include Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett, Newton and Rockdale.

As of July 28, health officials have seen say 95 cases compared to 51 cases this time last year.

The CDC has already predicted that the U.S. appears to be headed for its worst year for whooping cough in more than five decades.

The agency recommends whooping cough vaccines for all children and adults, but it's especially important for those in close contact with babies less than a year old.
