Atlanta police chief: cash accounts properly maintained

ATLANTA -

Atlanta's police chief says his department is properly maintaining funds from two bank accounts.

Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said that his department has to maintain separate accounts for items seized in cases or incidents. Those accounts are outside of what the city's Chief Executive Officer Jim Beard controls.

"I want everyone to know that every piece of money comes into the accounts of the city are accounted for from the very beginning," Turner told the Atlanta City Council on Wednesday.

As reported by FOX 5 last month, the APD has two accounts which each have a balance of $1 million.

Atlanta City Councilmember Alex Wan characterized the accounts as "slush" funds. Turner said he doesn't agree that the funds should be described using that term.

"These dollars are totally accounted for," said Turner.

City Auditor Leslie Ward said that her team has reviewed past missteps from a previous administration. She said there has been evidence that some of the funds from those accounts were used for other purposes inside the APD.
