People on Kinley Street couldn't believe their eyes: their neighbor drove his Smart onto his driveway with police in hot pursuit.
"I was tripping," Calvin Bradley said. "I couldn't believe it."
State troopers said they saw 49-year-old David Wheaton headed eastbound on the Katy Freeway doing 92 mph and weaving through traffic.
He got off at Kirkwood and stopped at the light when a state trooper approached his vehicle. Troopers said he reeked of alcohol and had a blank stare.
He then took off eastbound as fast as his Smart car could go. The trooper followed as he turned north on the West Loop and exited Ella.
A Houston Police officer tried to cut him off, but he avoided the attempt. He pulled into Kinley Street and onto his driveway. He was promptly arrested.
"He seemed like a really nice guy," neighbor Tony Lopez said. "He listened to music a little loud sometimes, but he was a nice guy."
Wheaton refused a breathalyzer test and had his blood drawn instead. He's charged with his third DWI and felony evading arrest.
