US Rep. Lewis wins primary, heads to November

ATLANTA (AP) - Democratic Rep. John Lewis will face Republican challenger Howard Stopeck as the civil rights veteran seeks a 14th term representing Atlanta's 5th Congressional District.

Lewis on Tuesday easily withstood a Democratic primary bid by former Fulton County Superior Court Judge Michael Johnson, who left the bench to try to unseat the iconic lawmaker. Unofficial returns showed Lewis with 81% of the vote to Johnson's 19% with 40% of precincts reporting.

Stopeck, a retired attorney, had no opposition in the Democratic primary.

Throughout his tenure, Lewis has been a liberal stalwart. With an overwhelmingly Democratic district, Lewis has often gone unopposed in general elections. His district is 1 of 4 majority-minority districts among Georgia's 14 House jurisdictions. It includes nearly all the metro Atlanta area inside Interstate 285.
