COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -

Authorities in College Park say a man was killed trying to help a driver stranded on train tracks on Tuesday.

Police say an elderly driver veered off of Roosevelt Highway and landed on railroad tracks underneath U.S. Highway 29 just after 1 p.m.

Briana Bell and DeKai Abusani Amonrasi saw the accident and rushed in to help. Just as Amonrasi began assisting the driver, a CSX train came barreling down the tracks.

"The Good Samaritan who stopped to render assistance, it's my understanding that he tripped and fell on the railroad tracks as the train was coming. Unfortunately, he ended up losing his legs," said Fulton County Police Sgt. Scott McBride.

Both men were rushed to Grady Memorial Hospital. Amonrasi later died, according to Fulton County police. He was 48 years old, according to police.

The driver, 73-year-old Herber Sinkfield, is expected to recover. Police do not know what caused his vehicle to leave the road.
