An 8-year-old boy was struck by a hit-and-run driver in Cedartown on Sunday, according to police.
Elijah Diamond, 8, was airlifted to Scottish Rite Hospital after being struck while riding his bike near his home.
Cedartown Assistant Police Chief James Newsome said that evidence and witnesses indicate that Diamond was not in the road when he was hit by the vehicle.
Diamond underwent surgery for a broken leg on Monday morning.
Newsome says it's a miracle that Elijah wasn't killed.
"Elijah's a very lucky man. He certainly is. I spoke with Elijah's mother who indicated that he had a pretty severely broken leg, but that he should be fine," said Newsome.
Police say 22-year-old Darius Jamal Strong was behind the wheel of the Chevy Malibu. He reportedly fled the scene, abandoning the car a few blocks away and fleeing on foot into nearby woods.
Police identified Strong after running his car tags. Strong turned himself in around midnight.
Newsome called Elijah's mom at the hospital to tell her Strong was in custody.
Strong faces several charges including reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and serious injury by a vehicle.
