Authorities say new markers are in place along a busy channel in Lake Lanier to help guide boaters through the busy area.
The Times of Gainesville reports (http://bit.ly/OdzjzZ ) that Lake Lanier Islands Resort added the new channel markers in the area surrounding the Sunset Cove beaches.
The red-and-green markers are designed to help boaters navigate the harbor.
Boating safety has been discussed by various groups this summer after several high-profile accidents on the lake northeast of Atlanta, but plans for the channel markers have been in the works for months before the accidents.
Authorities say the idea of adding the channel markers was initially discussed in meetings between the resort's managing company and the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority during Sunset Cove's first year of operation.
