Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The federal government has given fast track status to a transit hub proposed for downtown Atlanta. It will serve as a terminal for MARTA, Greyhound,  pedestrians and cyclists, as well as high speed and commuter rail.

The timeline for the plan will now be trimmed by a year.

Mayor Kasim Reed says the project will ensure that Atlanta is respected around the world.

Plans are underway for the project's design.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says metro Atlanta's congestion will be relieved and economic opportunities could be created by the transit hub.
