Metro Atlantans prep for National Dance Day

ATLANTA -

FOX's hit reality show So You Think You Can Dance has exploded in popularity. For the past three years, the show has done something so innovative it has had ripple effects from the dance floor right into your living room.

It's called National Dance Day, and some dancers in the metro area have already gotten the party started.

Jerri Benjamin has been dancing her entire life, touring the world with music superstars like TLC, P-Diddy and Ciara. She says she never felt people really respected the life of a dancer.

"That is so amazing that they are bringing it to light because no one knew the life of a dance except a dancer. But now you put it on TV for all the world to see, and you see the passion from choreographers to the dancers. It's amazing and I love it," said Benjamin.

The hugely popular reality show spotlights the beauty, grace and strength of dancing. This Saturday, dance fans will be joining in on the fun.

Three years ago, when executive producer Nigel Lithgoe realized the show had ignited a nationwide dance movement for men and women of all ages and abilities, he decided to start National Dance Day. It's one day where the entire country is dancing.

Zumba instructor Omega Bickham says count her in.

"In fact I'd love to do a flash mob. If I could get one together, I would totally take this somewhere and do it," said Bickham.

Bickham's students at Dance Stop Studios in Marietta, as well as Benjamin's students at Studio Dance Atlanta in Smyrna, are grooving all in preparation for the big day.

National Dance Day is Saturday, July 28.
