COBB COUNTY, Ga. -

A 12-year-old Cobb County boy nearly killed in a lacrosse accident shared his miraculous story with FOX 5 on Thursday.

Bret Hundredmark was in a coma for week and spent months in the hospital after a lacrosse ball hit him in the back of the head back in March.

Hundredmark had gone to the field with friends after a game to practice.

"I remember winning our game and going up to the wall, but nothing else," said Bret.

Amy Hundredmark, Bret's mother, said that a friend called her and said that he thought Bret was having an asthma attack.

When Amy Hundredmark got to the school, her son was unresponsive and barely breathing.

"I knew something was really, really wrong," said Amy.

Bret, who wasn't wearing a helmet, had been hit in the back of the head with a lacrosse ball. It severed an artery and there was bleeding on his brain. He was in a coma for weeks. There were surgeries and then weeks of a cruel roller coaster ride, where he would improve, only to return to near death.

"I really don't remember how I felt, but, I felt weak," said Bret.

Amy stayed in the hospital with her son around the clock for months.

"It's all pretty...pretty awful," said Amy.

Both relied on an amazing network of friends, neighbors and lacrosse players from all over the world who raised money and prayed for this young man's health.

Doctor's say Bret's youth and an experimental brain surgery spared him from any brain damage.

They credit his determination, for building up his strength and getting through physical therapy so quickly.

"A couple months ago I felt like I couldn't do anything. But now I feel like I can do almost anything," said Hundredmark.

Bret is still working on improving his coordination and strength but he will be back in school when classes start next month.

Amazingly, his neurosurgeon has given the OK for Bret to play lacrosse again next season.
