A Civil War artifact forced the evacuation of downtown Adairsville. The regional bomb squad was called in to detonate a mortar shell on display inside the city's museum on Tuesday.
Inside the Adairsville Rail Depot Museum, this display case held a relic from the Civil War.
A 12-pound Hotchkiss shell was donated to the museum more than a decade ago. Museum director Jerri Holloway says she never truly felt comfortable around it because no one could definitively tell her if it was dead or if it could blow up.
"One of the local fireman came in. He's a collector and he was looking at it... he began to back up. That was my first clue," said Holloway.
She tried to get someone to dispose of it, but didn't have any luck.
"We were stuck with it. We couldn't keep it, but we couldn't get away from it," said Holloway.
The train runs right outside the backdoor of the museum. Fearing the vibrations would set off the shell, Holloway put padding around it inside the case.
On Tuesday a collector came in and told Holloway that it could explode.
Police evacuated downtown Adairsville. The regional bomb squad was called in. Men suited up in protective gear and took the Civil War artifact away.
It turned out that it was a live round.
"It was very dangerous and very explosive," said Adairsville Police Det. Arnold Gillman. "I'm actually shocked that it has lasted as long as it did. A train comes by, there's a lot of vibration. It's a blessing from the Lord, I guess, that everyone here has remained safe."
