Atlanta mayor pushes for transportation vote

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed says the city risks being left behind economically unless voters approve more spending on transportation projects.

Reed made those remarks Sunday as he urged voters to approve a July 31 referendum that would authorize $6 billion in spending in metro Atlanta.

He said the transportation spending is important for the city's tourism industry, which affects thousands of jobs.

Opponents of the referendum including Tea Party groups and other city politicians have urged voters to reject the measure, saying it would increase the sales tax and would provide too much funding for road projects.
