Atlanta officer, 2 drivers sent to hospital after accident

ATLANTA -

An Atlanta police officer is one of two people injured in a crash Saturday afternoon on Cascade Road near Fairburn Road.

Fulton County police tells FOX 5 that the officer was traveling on westbound on Cascade Road when it struck the side of a BMW 740i sedan traveling southbound on Fairburn Road just before 5 p.m. Saturday. The crash sent the BMW into a Chevrolet Impala that was waiting for the light in the eastbound lanes on Cascade Road.

The patrol car caught fire trapping the officer inside. Rescue crews were able to pull him from the car and transported him to Grady Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the BMW also had to be extricated from her car. She was transported to Atlanta Medical Center also with serious injuries.

The driver of the Impala was taken to Grady Memorial and was later released.

Police say the officer was responding to a call with lights and sirens when the crash occurred.

The accident is still under investigation.
