Man accused of stealing $250K from elderly relative

Posted: Updated:

Atlanta police say a Statham man stole $250,000 from his own elderly relative.

Mager Leach, 92, saved up a nest egg by worked in the vending machine business and selling tires. He said he began saving his money when he was 20 years old. He says all of that money is now gone.

Atlanta Police say Leach, who lives with his 97-year-old sister, was swindled out of $250,000 by his great-nephew Sean Caldwell.

"It's bad, It's awful. Stealing from your own family," said Leach.

Atlanta Police's Fraud Unit says Caldwell, 39, wrote dozens of extremely large checks drawn on Leach's account and spent the money on lavish trips and meals.

"He took a Disney cruise…He had taken his family to Disney World, went to the Bellagio in Las Vegas, the Atlantis Resort in Bahamas. Taken a lot of trips, eaten at a lot of high end restaurants – Ruth's Chris Steak House," said Sgt. Paul Cooper of the Atlanta Police Department.

Caldwell has allegedly left his great-uncle almost penniless. A family caregiver says the 92-year-old has to pay out of pocket for healthcare, in-home doctor visits and utilities and gasoline.

Caldwell faces financial identity theft and exploitation of the elderly charges.
