Lightning causes damage in Gwinnett County

ATLANTA -

Heavy lightning and downed trees caused problems and damage throughout Gwinnett County on Wednesday.

A tree fell in the middle of John Yim's home in Duluth, Ga. Yim's wife was in the basement when it happened. She said that when she went up the stairs, she saw that the ceiling was gone and water was rushing in the house.

Down the road from the Yim's home, lightning apparently caused a fire at a house on Fairview Court.

"I was actually playing a video game and  there was an explosion, sounded like an explosion and I got shocked. I didn't know the house had been hit," said Eric Morris.

Morris says he still didn't know the house was on fire until his young son spotted the flames.

"I open all the blinds upstairs, he pointed to the corner of the house and went, ‘Hot, hot,' and I looked up and there was fire," said Morris.

Six apartments were damaged and 15 people displaced when a Club Lakes Parkway apartment building was struck by lightning.

"It hit ran inside the utilities and we had fire inside of a common wall there between two units," said Steve Wilson of the Gwinnett County Fire Department.

"I was on the computer felt a spark on my computer and actually fell out of my chair," said Joyce Sewell.

There were no injuries reported in the storms.

More afternoon thunderstorms are possible for the rest of the week, according to FOX 5 Storm Team chief meteorologist Ken Cook.
