ATLANTA -

Supporters of the upcoming transportation referendum have stepped up their campaign to convince undecided voters. A potential new tax would generate more than $7 million in metro Atlanta.

Backers of the 1-cent tax have renewed their TV ad campaign with a message about the cost of gridlock. Along with new radio ads, the commercial signals the final push to convince voters of the need for a transportation tax.

If approved, revenue from the tax would be used 157 projects in metro Atlanta. The vote will take place on July 31.

Warning that federal transportation dollars are no longer in the pipeline, Georgia Sen. Saxby Chambliss said he supports the so-called T-SPLOST.

"When folks go to the polls to decide whether or not they want to folk for T-SPLOST, if they don't have a better idea of how we're going to fund the infrastructure and transportation needs for Georgia, then this is best way route to go right now," said Chambliss.

Opinion polls have shown continuing opposition to the tax, and liberal and conservative groups have united in opposition.

The outcome could hinge on the urgency voters attach to congestion relief and their trust in government to spend billions of dollars in new tax revenue.

Regional tax referendums will take place across the state. The vote in this area will involve 10 metro Atlanta counties.
