A Fulton County judge sentenced three men who attacked a man in southwest Atlanta and then posted the beating online.
Judge T. Jackson Bedford sentenced Dorian Morange, Doreal Williams and Christopher Caine to five years in prison with probation for the assault and battery on Brandon White in February.
Prosecutors describe the beating as a hate crime because anti-gay rhetoric was heard during the broad daylight attack. They recommend eight to 10 years in prison for the men.
White said that he thought the sentence was fair.
Relatives for the defendants asked for mercy and leniency for the three men. They said the men, who are all on probation, can redeem themselves. Members of the gay, lesbian and transgender community sent a letter to the court asking the judge to sentence the three to probation only.
The three defendants read letters of apology to White in court.
White said that he doubted the sincerity of the apologies, but said he was ready to move on with his life.
