Battle of Atlanta to be remembered

To mark 148th Anniversary of the Battle of Atlanta, historians and civil war enthusiasts from across the nation will converge on some of the city's most historic sites from Saturday, July 14th through Sunday, July 22nd for the largest array of commemorative activities yet.

Everyone is invited to attend the planned events! Good Day Atlanta's Paul Milliken spoke with a representative of the event at Atlanta's historic Oakland Cemetery.

For more information on the 2012 Battle of Atlanta Commemoration and a list of planned activities, visit www.batlevent.org. Most of the Battle of Atlanta activities are free of charge.

A partial listing of events:

The Doublequick 5K Race across the battlefield is named for the marching orders given to soldiers when in a hurry. In July of 1864 there was a lot of doublequick marching being done in the area. Registration can be done online by going to www.batlevent.org or by visiting Big Peach Running Company.

Tours of the Battlefield and its cemeteries will be offered, "The Frontlines" and "McPherson's Last Ride and the Railroad Cut". A walking tour is also being offered. Walking Tour. Tours of two of the oldest cemeteries in the city and DeKalb County are offered for free. The regular ticket-price tours of Oakland are on both weekends of BATL and they offer free twilight tours on the 21st and 22nd requiring tickets and reservations. Tickets for the battlefield tours are available online or on July 21 until sell out at BATL Headquarters located on 447 Flat Shoals Road.

The Living History Experience covers not only the soldiers in a recreated breastworks fort, but civilians doing their daily work, and historical figures from Civil War through Civil Rights including Abraham Lincoln.  All of this is free and begins by visiting HQ for maps and times or you can go online.

The Author Talks begin at the DeKalb History Center on Monday at 7 p.m. with Jeffrey Haas who will talk about how his family history here in Atlanta led him to write a book about a particularly violent time in the Civil Rights Movement. At 7 p.m. on Wednesday, the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum will feature Marc Wortman who wrote The Bonfire: The Siege and Burning of Atlanta. On Sunday the 22nd at 7 p.m. the Atlanta Cyclorama will host Mark Auslander who wrote a book about how the Methodist Church and the precursor to Emory University became involved in owning slaves and what it meant to the families involved and the institutions. On Saturday Eric Litwin, author of children's favorite Pet The Cat, will kick off our Storytelling Fest performing some of Pete's favorite Civil War folk tunes.
