Troopers say debris from a Freightliner tractor's transmission flew over the interstate wall and struck a Chevy Trailblazer being driven by Jameka Malone. The debris went through the windshield, struck Malone in the arm and then hit and killed her son, Cameron McIlwain, who was sitting in the backseat with his 19-month-old sister Kanary.
"She said it happened so fast she [doesn't] even remember," said Quantaine Malone, Jameka's husband and Cameron's stepfather.
Doctors were able to reattach Jameka Malone's arm, but she lost her hand.
Quantaine Malone, said he drove 14 hours to the hospital after hearing the news.
"Cameron was her heart. For awhile, it was just him and her," said Quantaine Malone, who married Jameka three years ago.
DeKalb County Schools employee Teri Noble said she was a registrar at Hawthorne Elementary when Cameron attended kindergarten and first grade there.
"He was one of the sweetest little kids I knew," said Noble.
An attorney for the Freightliner involved in the accident, CW Transport, issued a statement saying they are "actively investigating the cause of this unfortunate incident. Our deepest sympathies go out to all of those that are affected and their families."
Quantaine Malone, a truck driver himself, said that his family hopes that the driver of the truck does not harbor guilt.
Authorities said that the investigation into the accident is ongoing.
