Lunchbox museum home to 2,000+ memorable tins

Posted: Updated:

Did you have a favorite lunchbox when you were a kid?  If you did, there's a good chance that our own Paul Milliken saw it when he visited one of the coolest museums around: The Lunchbox Museum.  You probably didn't know it, but it's located in Columbus, and it's home to the largest collection of lunch boxes on the planet.

If you want to take a trip back to your elementary school days, all you have to do is hop in the car and head about two hours south of Atlanta.  There, you'll find The Lunchbox Museum, thanks to Allen Woodall.  He's the man behind the massive collection of tin lunch boxes, and even though he's collected about 2,000 of them, he's not satisfied just yet.

He's got everything from Indiana Jones to Pinocchio to the Smurfs and everything in between.  Strangely, Woodall tells FOX 5 he didn't have a colorful lunchbox as a child, but don't feel sorry for him.  He wrote the book on them-- really.  He co-authored The Encyclopedia of Metal Lunch Boxes and Price Guide, which traces his collection from A to Z, or Archie to Zorro.

He's been courted by the Smithsonian, but Woodall says his collection isn't yet complete.  He's missing the ultra-rare Toppie the Elephant lunchbox.  Another highly-coveted box, the 1936 Mickey Mouse, is in his possession, but it's not on display.  Woodall says he keeps it in a very safe place!

Woodall also owns the International Marketplace, which is home to a collection of everything from signs to cars to antique furniture.

If you'd like to visit The Lunchbox Museum, here's how to find it:
318 10th Avenue
Columbus, GA 31901

Admission is $5.00 for adults.
