Investigators conducted announced drug testing at the city of Atlanta facility where a whistleblower told FOX 5 that drinking and drug smoking occur in the open.
Earlier this week, FOX 5's Morse Diggs broke the story of what appears to be a chronic and dangerous mix of employees enjoying alcohol just before they climb into the cab of a heavy duty city vehicle.
The whistleblower, who asked to remain anonymous, said that numerous employees at the Pipe Yard drink alcohol and use marijuana while on the job.
"I know that at night time, they go to drink, and when the night falls, it's like a saloon there," said the worker.
The worker said that managers either participate or tolerate the situation.
Atlanta Human Resources Commissioner Yvonne Cowser Yancy confirmed that night shift employees at the Pipe Yard were drug tested on Wednesday.
"We hope that people will understand that we have a zero tolerance policy, and we plan to enforce that policy," said Yancy.
Critics have suggested that Department of Watershed Management Commissioner Jo Ann Macrin and her deputies should make surprise inspections at all facilities.
Yancy says employees can come directly to her if they see wrongdoing.
"At the end of the day, we expect our employees to bring this to our attention so that we can appropriately take action," said Yancy.
This investigation began when city managers say one water employee was spotted purchasing a case of beer while on duty and in a city vehicle.
