CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

Clayton County police are investigating the mysterious death of a 2-year-old boy in Jonesboro.

Neighbors said that they saw the child's stepfather running toward the office at the Marquis Grand Apartments on Tara Blvd on Wednesday afternoon.  He had a child in his arms and was yelling for help. The boy wasn't breathing. Pool monitor Larry Williams began performing CPR while others called 911.

"I did all I could do," said Williams.

Paramedics took the boy to Southern Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police have launched an investigation.

"We want to make sure that we turn over every stone to find out exactly what took place here today," said Sgt. Otis Willis of the Clayton County Police Department.

Three other children, including the 2-year-old twin of the deceased child, were transported to the hospital as a precaution, police said. Family members said they were OK.

A hazmat unit responded to the scene, but failed to find any signs of CO or other dangerous situations.

A family member says the boy's mother was at work at the time.
