Living a life with little or no sight can be a difficult adjustment. One metro Atlanta agency, the Center for Visually Impaired, is helping thousands of Georgians to make the transition smoothly.
After a career as a teacher, Tomica Savoy decided to become a makeup artist. But four years ago, while driving with her dad, something went horribly wrong.
"I had to pull over on the side. I said ‘Dad, I cannot drive. Something is wrong with my eyes.' And I just started crying," said Savoy.
The vessels in Savoy's eyes had burst due to diabetic retinopathy. She went totally blind but after three surgeries, her vision was partially restored. Savoy says a part of her life is back to normal thanks to the Center for Visually Impaired.
CVI is the largest provider of services for the visually impaired in Georgia. Every year, more than 5,000 people of all ages, with limited or no sight, turn to them for help.
"They have taught me how to get around with MARTA Mobility as well as regular MARTA, the train systems, learning how to walk with a cane, being able to ask people, you know, for help if I need it," said Savoy.
Savoy says she is determined to continue living a full life.
"We can learn and do everything. The only thing we cannot do is drive," said Savoy.
CVI has a program called STARS where children are given the confidence they need to live with vision loss. The program needs resources to purchase Braille books and computer programs.
Because the teacher in Savoy won't go away, she's committed herself to raising the funds. The All White Affair With A Touch Of Color Fashion Show and Birthday Celebration will be held Saturday, July 14 at 5:00 p.m. at the Funkstation Factory located at 608 Interchange Drive, #107, in Atlanta. Tickets are $12 in advance and $25 for VIP tickets. For online tickets, click here!
A portion of the proceeds will go to CVI's STARS program.
