Committee advances proposal to ban smoking at city parks

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A ban on smoking in city of Atlanta parks has moved a step closer to reality. A committee voted to send the ordinance to a full council vote on Tuesday.

Councilman Alex Wan is spearheading the effort to ban smoking in public parks.

Supporters of the ordinance spoke out in favor of it at a committee hearing on Tuesday. Just one person spoke against the measure.

Councilmembers could vote on the park smoking ban on Monday.

If approved by the council and Mayor Kasim Reed,  the ban would take effect immediately.

Several metro area cities and counties have already passed smoking bans in parks.
