ROCKDALE COUNTY, Ga. -

A battered women's shelter in Rockdale County is rebuilding after a sprinkler meltdown. Over the weekend, the attic sprinkler system at Project Renewal exploded, pouring 18,000 gallons on the building.

"Pretty much everything we had in the building is ruined due to water damage," said Vickie Stevenson, the center's executive director.

The mold and water has contaminated the supplies, making them unusable for the eight families who lived at the shelter. Those mothers and their children have relocated to other shelters, some as far away as two hours commute from their jobs.

The destruction has also meant the loss of 18 jobs including the shelter manager, a children's advocate, a counselor and others who are critical for the day-to-day operations.

"The staff right now will not be back in the facility for probably four to six weeks," said Stevenson.

Stevenson says the need to repair is urgent since Georgia ranks sixth in the nation in women being killed or injured by husbands or boyfriends.

"We definitely will get it done. It may take some time but we'll get it done, thanks to the help of a lot of people," she said.

Stevenson estimated the damages are at least $250,000. She says much of that won't be covered by insurance.
