Officials are scrambling to fix a problem with its air conditioning system at the city jail in Atlanta. The air conditioning system at the detention center is broken. City employees have had to set up a temporary cooling station to cool down the downtown building.
With recent record temperatures in the city, the heat has created problems for both the inmates and the staff.
Several sources told FOX 5's Morse Diggs that the heat has created unhealthy conditions. One female officer reportedly received medical attention after passing out and striking her head. City official said that the officer collapsed because she missed a meal. However, staffers told Morse that it was because of the heat.
The problem began in early June when a chiller broke down. The city has attempted to rebuild both chillers. A large external chiller is temporarily being used to pump cool air into the building while the repairs are underway.
Half the jail is still reportedly affected by the heat.
