GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -
Florida Senator Marco Rubio paid a visit to Gwinnett County on Thursday amid speculation that he'll be tapped as Mitt Romney's running mate.
A long line greeted the rising Republican star as he signed copies of his book, "An American Son," at the Books-A-Million at Discover Mills.
The senator did not directly address the speculation that he was being considered as Romney's choice for vice president.
"Here's what I can tell you for sure. Gov. Romney is a very successful person in everything he's ever done because he makes good decisions. Which, by the way, is the number one qualification of being president," said Rubio. "And so I know that he'll make a good decision in picking a vice president. But just out of respect for his process, I just don't talk about it."
Conservative leaders have criticized the Romney campaign in recent days and urged the candidate to provide more details about what he would do as president, but Rubio said likely policy changes were clear.
"I like you would see the economy begin to turn around pretty quickly. Obviously we have a ways to go, but I think you would start to see growth again. Unemployment would come down, the debt would become more manageable. I think he's talked about that clearly and I think that's what this campaign is going to be about," said Rubio.
Romney and his family have been relaxing this week in New Hampshire, where his wife Ann said the campaign is considering a woman as part of the vice-presidential search.
Rubio is only 41 and in his first Senate term, but already he has attracted a wide following among Republican conservatives.
Georgia politicians are among Rubio's fans, including state Senator Don Balfour who joined the crowd with books to sign and praise for Rubio's prospects.
"He'd be a great choice," said Balfour.
Romney has talked little about the vice-presidential search other than to say he will choose a running mate before the Republican National Convention in late August. Speculation has centered on six men -- senators and governors -- and a former governor. But at least six other names -- four of them women -- are also being mentioned.
