ATLANTA (AP) - A reporter for Georgia's largest Spanish-language newspaper who covers immigration issues has found himself at the center of his own immigration struggle.
Mundo Hispanico reporter Mario Guevara came to Georgia in 2004. He applied for asylum, saying he had been beaten and threatened by leftist groups in his native El Salvador because he worked for a conservative newspaper with close ties to the party in power at the time.
An immigration judge last month denied his request for asylum and ordered him, his wife and their daughter to leave the country within 60 days. Guevara's lawyer plans to appeal.
Immigration authorities say they're working with him to close his case and allow him to stay. His lawyer says they're open to that as long as Guevara is authorized to work.
