SNELLVILLE, Ga. -

A Marine from Gwinnett County made it home from Afghanistan just in time for Independence Day. It's made this July 4 one that his mom will never forget.

When Lance Cpl. Sean Hayes arrived home Friday night, he was met with a big celebration.

"I had the best hug of my life. The best hug of my life," said Sean's mother Jody Hayes.

Sean Hayes spent seven months in patrolling the streets in Afghanistan.

"I'm a M203 grenadier, grenade launcher. Basically, I carry M-16 with a grenade launcher," said Hayes said.

While Sean says he has a different perspective on his own freedom since serving as a Marine, his mom said this is a bittersweet time.

"It was a long seven months, I prayed a lot," Jody Hayes said.

As a concerned mom for her only child, Jody was part of a support group made up of mothers who prayed their sons and daughters would make it home for this red, white and blue celebration.

"I get all the notices of those that have given. Sometimes when it comes time to celebrate, I can't help but also feel for the moms and families who are missing their loved ones," said Jody Hayes. "I'm the proudest mom. He left a boy, came home a man. He has such an appreciation for life."

Sean Hayes just turned 20. He's stationed at Camp Lejeune and is awaiting his next orders.
