Storm brings down trees in Sandy Springs

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. -

A strong storm knocked down several trees across Sandy Springs on Tuesday. One tree fell on a car, missing the driver by just inches.

Homer Gaines said that he heard a tree snap from inside his home. He then saw a car underneath it with the driver still inside.

"Luckily she was in an area…a compartment that was safe," said Gaines.

Fire crews extricated the driver, Bridgette Carter, from the car. She escaped with a few scrapes and bruises. She credits Gaines – her landlord – with helping stay calm while she was trapped. She is also grateful for firefighters who avoiding downed power lines to free her.

Sandy Springs police said that eight trees fell during Tuesday's storms.

Floodwaters also caused a sinkhole on Abernathy Road, which caused some traffic problems. Crews expected to repair the road by Wednesday morning.

Authorities said that Carter was the only person who suffered injuries due to the storm.

Carter initially declined to go to the hospital, but later said she would be checked out.
