ATLANTA -

Several severe thunderstorms affected north Georgia on Tuesday afternoon.

Strong storms began popping up in northeast Georgia area around 3 p.m. and continued into the evening. The storms were capable of producing heavy rain, lightning, strong winds and hail.

ATLANTA STREETS FLOODED

Severe thunderstorms caused several streets to flood in southwest Atlanta on Tuesday.

The storms hit the metro area as rush hour was in full progress, heavily impacting traffic.

Some drivers were stranded when their cars stalled on flooded streets.

"It didn't look like it was flooded at all, but the deeper we got in it, it just kind of sunk. The car sunk," said Valencya Barnett.

For a few terrifying moments, the Barnett family said they were trapped in their car as the water rose.

"It just kept filling up and filling up, so it was time to get out of there," said Horace Barnett.

"I went all the way under the water," said Valencya Barnett.

Several cars were trapped in the water at a Northside Drive underpass.

Alvin Smith said he underestimated the depth of the water. He learned the hard way when his car got stuck.

"I learned my lesson," said Smith.

TREES FALL IN SANDY SPRINGS

Sandy Springs Police Capt. Steve Rose said that six to eight trees came down in the area. One woman was slightly injured after a tree came on her car, Rose said.

A drain backup created a hole at 6600 Roswell Road at the Abernathy Road intersection, according to Rose. The right lane of northbound traffic was closed due to the damage. There was no word on when repairs would be made.

According to Department of Transportation officials, a fire truck was involved in an accident on I-285 southbound near Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. The driver of the fire truck was reportedly injured. It was not immediately clear what department the firefighter originated from.

TRAILERS TOPPLED IN HENRY COUNTY

Henry County police tell FOX 5 that several trailers were blown over at the Briggs and Stratton on Highway 42 south in McDonough near King Mill Road.

The Henry County Fire Department says that one person was injured, but that injury was not life-threatening.

There were also reports of scattered power outages affecting homes and traffic lights in Henry County.

FOX 5 Storm Team chief meteorologist Ken Cook says that the next few days could see similar pockets of thunderstorms developing in the afternoons.
